Accessing consoles 9–51
9.30 Accessing consoles
You can connect to the console of a server through the iLO, as shown in the following example (where
south6 is the server being accessed):
# hpls_console --server south6
By default, the connection is to the iLO serial port emulation, which is used to access the Linux console
(configured as ttyS1 (COM2)). If you want to connect to the Remote Console Port, which is used to access
the BIOS and iLO menus, use the --remote argument with the command.
NOTE: Do not stay connected to the serial port console for long periods. If the server fails while you are
still connected, you will compromise the ability of the peer server to take over the MDS and OST services of
the crashing server. In addition, if the server crashes while you are connected to the serial console port, the
server may be reset before the crash dump completes.
Servers have getty enabled on /dev/ttyS0—this allows the COM1 port to be used as a console.
9.31 Accessing the iLO component
This section is organized as follows:
Configuring the iLO component (Section 9.31.1)
Troubleshooting iLO access (Section 9.31.2)
9.31.1 Configuring the iLO component
There are two ways that you can configure the iLO component on a ProLiant DL server, as follows:
Using the remote console (Section 9.31.1.1)
Using a Web browser (Section 9.31.1.2)
Both of these methods can be used after the iLO component has been given an IP address and the
administration server has been installed.
NOTE: To configure the iLO component on a server before the iLO component has been given an IP
address and the administration server has been installed, you must connect a monitor and keyboard to the
server and have a Linux system or a Microsoft Windows PC running a Web browser (Mozilla or Microsoft
Windows Internet Explorer) connected to the management network.
9.31.1.1 Using the remote console
CAUTION: If you do not want the iLO password to be transmitted on the network in plain text, you must
perform these steps using the monitor and keyboard connected to the administration server through the
KVM switch.
To configure the iLO component using the remote console, perform the following steps:
1. Enter the following command, where server_name is the name of the server being accessed:
# hpls_console --server server_name --remote
NOTE: By default, the connection is to the iLO serial port emulation. Using the --remote
argument changes this to the remote console.
You are now connected to the remote console.
