Performance Management
You can implement performance management of V-VOLs as follows.
Collecting monitor information
By analyzing the following monitor information, you can gure out the workload for pools
(frequency of access, increase rate trend of the used pool capacity, and access workload of the
hard disk drive) and the workload for V-VOLs (frequency of access and trend in rates of increase in
the pool allocation), and use this information for tuning, such as allocating volumes appropriately.
Frequency of V-VOL access, read hit ratio, and write hit ratio (by Performance Monitor)
Pool usage rates in the parity group (by Performance Monitor)
The current used pool capacity and the chronological changes in the used pool capacity
The current used V-VOL capacity (ratio of the stored data) and the chronological changes in
the used V-VOL capacity
Tuning
The following tuning functions enable you to allocate volumes appropriately:
Once you have collected the relevant data, you can use Business Copy to copy V-VOLs,
thereby lessening pool bottlenecks. For more information on Business Copy, see HP
StorageWorks XP24000 Business Copy Software User's Guide.
When normal volumes and pool-VOLs are in the same parity group, Auto LUN enables you to
migrate normal volumes to another parity groups. For more information on Auto LUN, see HP
StorageWorks XP24000 Auto LUN Software User's Guide.
Collecting monitor information and tuning improves system throughput and availability.
The next gure shows how to manage usage rates and I/Os.
