One method you will use to monitor pool capacity is setting thresholds. Once a threshold is exceeded, a
SIM (Service Information Message) is issued, and a trap is reported to SNMP. For more information about
SNMP traps, see HP StorageWorks XP24000 SNMP Agent Reference Guide.
You can monitor pool capacity directly by using the XP Thin Provisioning window (see
XP Thin Provisioning Windowon page 38. For details about monitoring and tuning resources, see
Monitoring and Tuning Resources”onpage21.
You can also monitor system performance using HP StorageWorks XP Performance Monitor or monitor
pool capacity using HP StorageWorks XP RAID Manager. For more information on Performance Monitor,
see HP StorageWorks XP24000 Performance Monitor User’s Guide. For more informationonRAID
Manager, see HP StorageWorks XP RAID Manager User's Guide.
Increasing
the Pool Capacity
You can incr
ease the pool capacity by adding a pool-VOL to the pool created for XP Thin Provisioning.
The total ca
pacity of pool-VOLs in a pool is the pool capacity. You need to check the free space on a
pool that can be used, and increase the pool, if necessary.
Deleting V-VOLs
When you delete V-VOLs created for XP Thin Provisioning, you need to execute the following procedure.
If you delete V-VOLs, the pool area that has been used by the V-VOLs until then is released and free
space on the pool is increased.
1. Delete the path denitions. For details on deleting path denitions, see the HP StorageWorks
XP24000 LUN Manager User’s Guide.
2. Perform LDEV formatting on the V-VOLs to delete them.
3. Release the association between the V-VOLs and pools.
4. Delete the V-VOLs.
Deleti
ng Pools
When yo
u delete pools created for XP Thin Provisioning, you need to delete the V-VOLs associated with
the pools.
Interoperability with Other Products and Functions
XP Thin Provisioning volumes (V-VOLs and pool-VOLs) can be used by other program products. Program
products that can and that cannot be used in conjunction with XP Thin Provisioning are explained in the
following tables. However, program products for mainframe systems are excluded from the following
tables, because mainframe systems are not supported.
